Talking Shit
By Bill Dixon
“Oh my god, have you seen this video?”
Whenever I hear this sentence my eyes start to dart around the room looking for the nearest door or open window to make an escape. I suppose a closed window would do if someone starts loading a YouTube video of their cousin’s girlfriend’s brother’s accountant’s hip-hop trio’s first gig recorded on an iPhone in a poorly lit bar. How bad could it hurt, hurling my body through the window of a fifth floor apartment? Break glass in case of emergency, right?
But sometimes you are pleasantly surprised and offered a little nugget of truly inspired music or comedy or whatever. This was the case when I first saw Shit Girls Say. A really clever and funny piece of comedy that deserves its meme-dom.
Unfortunately this gave way to hundreds of less funny parody/homage videos. The first being Shit Guys Say. Because, obviously, whenever there is something successful, the inclination is to make its less inspired, gender specific counterpart (see: The Other Half.)
I’m sure the videomaker’s intentions were innocent enough, “Hey, what a cool video! Wait a minute, I own a camera! Oh, wow, hold the phone, I know of groups of people who may say specific things due to culture, socio-economic status and genetic heritage! I need to grab my iPad, find a torrent of Do The Right Thing, and google ‘black people words.’”
Some of the Shit Girls Say copies are funny and well executed but it’s cheapened by the fact that the idea wasn’t born into existence through years of observations and thoughtful execution of a creative idea. Hundreds of creative rush jobs to piggyback off of something truly funny that is a month old. It’s a really great idea but it’s someone else’s really great idea and that’s sort of a bummer.
whoa…hold on. I just got an idea. What if I satirize something that satirizes something else that satirizes that last satire, and then, admit to satirizing that one satire at the end.
That would be so meta.
Shit that people who are making fun of people who emulate Shit That Girls Say say.
That’ll be the shit.

One of my most favorite movies. Here’s to you Mrs. Robinson, for making a movie an American classic.
